FAQ

What does the free VIN check do?

It identifies the car and shows what battery health is normal for that model at its age and mileage, using published studies, plus battery recalls, warranty status and replacement cost. It doesn’t test this car’s battery; for that, add a dash reading or connect the car.

Can’t I just look this up myself?

You can find typical numbers for a model. What you can’t get elsewhere is a reading from this specific car’s battery that a seller can share and a buyer can verify. The free check is the starting point; connected and measured reports are where it gets specific.

Why should I enter a dash reading?

It turns a model-level estimate into a rough reading of this car. Take the range and battery % at the same moment, at 40% charge or higher. Dash range depends on recent driving, so the result is shown as a wide range.

Where do your benchmarks come from?

Published studies of real-world battery tests and fleet data, listed with links on our methodology page. Every report names the sources it used.

What does the grade mean?

The letter comes from electric range loss against the factory baseline in the registry. Under 5 percent is A. 25 percent or more is F. A plug-in or hybrid older than four years with more than 15 percent loss moves one grade worse. It is not a workshop measurement.

How accurate is this?

The accuracy table on this site is the published record. Empty cells say accuracy data is publishing soon. This page does not fill a blank cell with a guess.

Why is the dollar figure a range?

The dollar figure is excess fade beyond cars of the same model, age, and mileage. It is always a low and a high. It is $0–$0 when the car is no worse than that cohort.

Can I check a car I do not own?

Yes for a VIN norms check. A connected reading or a measured test needs the owner, or someone the owner has allowed.

What data is read if I connect?

The account read is the odometer, state of charge, remaining range, VIN, and make, model, and year. See Privacy.

Does this replace an inspection?

No. Informational estimate. Not a mechanical inspection or financial advice.

Which vehicles can I check?

The registry list is on Supported vehicles. A car that is not listed cannot be scored yet.

Is it free?

It is free during beta. Planned items are listed on Pricing. Unpublished prices stay hidden.
